Wednesday, Oct 2, 2002 - Start Audio -00:00 Mary Bishop: introduction: an hour with M. J. Akbar, Indian newspaperman, and author of The Shade of Swords; Jihad and the Conflict between Islam and Christianity..
-00:52
Robert Knight and the Knight Report.. Robert:
George Bush about to get a license to kill.. Congressional leaders state their belief that Bush will resolve the crisis via diplomacy.. Bush holds press conference in the Rose Garden, while protestors yell outside.
-04:44 Dennis Bernstein: the impact on the region reverberated with the US attacks in Afghanistan.. now an hour with M.J. Akbar (link2), author of The Shade of Swords; Jihad and the Conflict between Islam and Christianity (link2) (order from Cody's Online) reknowned Indian scholar and founder of Asian Age and two others newspapers.. Akbar: NEVER UNDERESTIMATE SADDAM HUSSEIN, TYRANNY ALONE DOES NOT KEEP ONE IN POWER, HE IS CLEVER AND CRAFTY.. particularly when one is not sure of the consistency of his friends.. the first mistake Americans did is announce their intentions so early (four months ago).. Saddam waited to the last minute to give his counterpunch (accepting inspections again).. a sucker punch .. it will be difficult for the United States to climb out of this hole.. India has 70 Iraqs inside it.. Iraq has always had a pro-India attitude.. now that Hussein has allowed weapons inspectors in.. the importance of credibility.. a war without the kind of bountaries that most wars have.. reaction to this war could take the form of global terrorism.. when Bush was running for president, he couldn't remember the name of the leader of Pakistan.. Dennis: the US not hunting for terrorists in Saudi Arabia.. Akbar: if support for terrorism is the reason for regime change, why not attack the Saudis?.. Dennis: the 'Shade of Swords'?.. Akbar: "Paradise is under the shade of swords".. a quote from the Prophet, but his Jihad is a Jihad against injustice.. Jihad is not an irresponsible war.. the ten rules of Jihad: 1) TERRORISM HAS NO PLACE IN JIHAD, YOU CAN NOT KILL AN INNOCENT MAN, NOR A WOMAN OR CHILD, NOT EVEN A PALM TREE OR CROPS.. Dennis: Americans cannot not tell the difference between Osama bin Laden and Islam.. Akbar: after the US created the mujahadeen.. and the mujadeen defeated the Soviets.. bin Laden said that 'if I with my Jihad can defeat the most powerful army in the world, why can I not defeat the USA?'.. about the trial for the first attackers of the WTO.. one said 'I dream of the day when I shall watch these twin towers topple over like dominoes'.. the Israeli Palestinian conflict a template for the war on terrorism.. has widened into South Asia.. between Afghanistan and Bangladesh live half the world's Muslims.. much bigger fish out there floating and still free (in Pakistan).. about the conversion of Pakistan into a religious state.. a state that has become a breeding ground for terrorism and fundamentalism.. Dennis: US with Pakistan war against the Soviets.. and now this latest war.. Akbar: ONE OF THE GREAT PROBLEMS OF AMERICAN FOREIGN POLICY.. AMERICA DOES NOT COMPLETE A WAR, DECLARES VICTORY EARLY AND LEAVES NOT UNDERSTANDING WHAT IT HAS LEFT.. TO MANAGE A VICTORY IS FAR FAR MORE DIFFICULT THAN TO MANAGE A BATTLE.. about the bombing of Kanduhar, great precision of American arms.. with this kind of superpower ability, the Taliban is not removed from Afghanistan.. *president* Karsai almost assassinated by a former Taleban.. IT IS THE DUTY OF MUSLIM GOVERNMENTS TO EDUCATE THE YOUNG THAT TERRORISM IS NOT THE ANSWER.. America not closed one front, wants to open another.. have you thought of the consequences?.. not of losing in Iraq, but of winning?.. .. oil industry negotiating with the Taleban for years, an investigation might go nearer the white house than you think.. the VP involved.. a very strong feeling that this war has nothing to do with morality, but has everything to do with profit.. in 1991 the world community supported the US because Iraq was wrong to occupy a foreign country, now the US wants to occupy a foreign country.. Karsai one of Afghan's oil negotiators, is that a shock or what?.. Afghanistan has been invaded four times.. twice by the British, once by the Russians, now again in 2001.. about the similarities.. Kabul fell without a fight all four times.. then it took two or three years for a reaction to develop.. -33:24 Dennis: still w M.J. Akbar: about the conflict going on in Kashmir.. for fifty years.. caused by British partition.. like where America was a hundred years ago.. rule by lynch mob.. one of the biggest mistakes India made in Kashmir, denied democracy, rigged elections.. WE NEED TO EXTEND THE SPIRIT OF DEMOCRACY AND TOLERANCE ESPECIALLY TO TROUBLED REGIONS.. about the difference between secular and religious states.. about Israel.. THE GREAT GENOCIDE AGAINST THE JEWS, NOT DONE BY MUSLIMS, BUT DONE BY CHRISTIANS.. TORTURE AGAINST THEM, THEN HITLER.. (THOSE EVENTS) DEMANDED THAT THE JEWS BE GIVEN THE RIGHT TO DEFEND THEMSELVES.. AND NOW THE TIME HAS COME TO GIVE THE PALESTINIANS A STATE AS WELL.. Dennis: Sharon celebrating the war on Iraq.. thinking about the 'transfer' of the Palestinians.. Akbar: astounding that the Israelis would think they could get away with fascism.. Jihad not an invitation to kill but an invitation to die.. young people strapped with bombs.. is the hard fact to bear.. two tradegies intertwined.. why is it the person who entered the camps of Sabra and Chatila, now elected head of a powerful state?.. Christianity and Islam, both are very old religions.. long periods in which the two have shared knowledge, shared science.. about the 'bloodless' crusade..

-20:58 Leslie Kean: Iraq.. now w Media Beat's Norman Solomon of the Institute for Public Accuracy.. just returned from Iraq, part of a delegation.. Norman: the word from Vienna a fairly successful meeting between Iraqis and the UN inspection teams.. the White House does not really want inspections.. the Bush regime hell bent on attacking Iraq with huge military force.. Leslie: sanctions are a weapon of mass destruction.. Norman: upsetting to go from room to room in the hospital and see kids with cancer and getting no treatment because of US imposed sanctions.. a human reality, to 5,000 children dying every month.. we got to Baghdad in mid September.. to establish a face-to-face dialoque.. Nick Rahall of West Virginia went.. former US Senator James Abourezk (link2) of South Dakota.. also Jim Jennings of Conscience International.. people at the grass roots level have to every legal thing we can think to stop this war.. about the media language used about war... -00:00 Leslie Kean: introduction: 350,000 march in London; *National Security Strategy*; rightwing *Campus Watch* website targets US academics
-00:48 Robert Knight and the Knight Report.. Robert: Iraqi weapons inspection talks progressing well, bad news for Bush's plan, Anglo American bombers hit Iraq; Russia and France do not support Bush's UN resolution; Inspection head Blix says team to be in Iraq by December.. Ivory Coast two week old crisis.. 3 Palestinians killed including two children, one ten years old , one thirteen years old, one Israel soldier killed.. Israeli special forces already in Western Iraq.
-05:08 Leslie: perhaps as many as 450,000 people flooding the streets of London.. now w organizer, Mike Marksey (sp?), of the Stop the War Coalition.. Mike: one of the most remarkable mass demonstrations in European history; we want Blair to break from Bush now, we will not support a war but in Iraq, an extraordinary mix of activists and ordinary people who just don't like what's going down.. it's bloody unifying.. we assembled just norht of the river Thames, past Whitehall, Trifalgar square, Hyde Park.. the march was four and a half hours long, all entirely peaceful.. only one arrest.. extremely colourful.. banners, flags, signs.. a huge amount of hard work to organize on little money.. we spent just 40,000 pounds on organizing this.. Mike: message to Bush: 'We in Britain will not support this war'.. part of an overwhelming global resistance.. without doubt, we will keep the pressure on Blair..
-12:47 Pledge to Resist: ..not in our name.. no more transfusions of blood for oil.. not by our hands will we supply weapons for the annihilation of families on foreign soil.. we pledge to make common cause with the people of the world.. another world is possible and we pledge to make it real.. ,read by Paul
-14:20 Leslie: the new "National Security Strategy" adopted by Bush.. of preemtive strikes, report by author David Armstrong author of the story.. David: the plan is for the US to rule the world.. at the time of the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1992, Bush the first, Wolfowitz, Cheney, Powell.. to insure that the US could dominate the world, prevail in any situtation, and not be threatened in any way.. Richard Perl, Paul Wolfowitz.. America's imperial moment.. in 1992 it met with bad reviews, protests around the world.. it was shelved for the 1992 election.. unilateralism.. penchant for pre-emption.. using low yield nuclear weapons.. the best we can hope for, is.. the US sending a clear message to the world that this is US policy from now on, saying, "we decide the targets".. read David's report in Harpers Magazine at your local newsstand and library.. more info www.publicEDcenter.org
-34:40 music break Spearhead
-35:50 Leslie: college campuses.. about the rightwing http://www.campuswatch.org website.. blacklisting US academics *critical of Israel*.. listed on the website, is Snahal Shengavi, teacher at UCB of a class titled, The Politics and Poetics of Palestinians Resistance.. Snahal: all of the professors on the list targeted, we've been receiving hate mail, our families have been contacted.. about the website.. caused the hate mail by.. unbelievable amounts of pressure to change the way I was teaching the course.. I am quite proud of the class.. the students putting forth compelling ideas.. a McCarthyite tactic.. our response: now so many unlisted acedemics (like me) are writing the website, and demanding to be included on the list too.. the president of Harvard said that calling for the divestment from Israel is anti-Semitic.. had a paralyzing effect on free speech.. those issues have to be separated.. those issues have to be openly debated and publicly addressed.. now w UCB Professor Judith Butler: I've seen journalists when they start to do a piece about Palestine.. they get real nervous worrying about the truth *offending* pro-Zionist elements in their lives.. another paralyzing effect on free speech.. -54:00 Rainjita Geesler, wrapup: yesterday (most probably because of the recent press attention, including KPFA, Flashpoints, and FSRN) the aforementioned website abruptly quit blacklisting college acedemics for being *too* pro-Palestinian. It now focuses on progressive organizations..

Aurora: poetry can function as a scalpel.. to allow people to wake up, to feel a personal intimate connection with current events.. about her new book, born the day after 9/11.. Aurora: after 9/11 my personal life fell apart, my husband an affair with someone half his age, and left our marriage, our work partnership.. what makes some people keep faith and others not keep faith.. the metaphor of political struggle.. the most difficult writing I've ever done, (and the best)

-00:00 Mary Bishop: introduction: encore presentation of an hour long interview with legendary whistleblower, Daniel Ellsberg, of 'Pentagon Papers' fame
-01:00
Robert Knight and the Knight Report.. Robert:
Congress moves closer to a non-declaration of war, allowing Bush to persue military action "as he determines to be necessary and appropriate".. Rumsfeld claims Iraq and Al-Quada conspiracy.. Ivory Coast calls for peacekeepers; French troops evacuate 1000 foreigners.. post Taliban opium production soars from 185 tons last year to 2,700 tons this year (+1,400%).. inside Britain, an anti-dope (ie anti-Tony Blair) rally.. "Bush will hit Iraq like a drunk hits a bottle, to satisfy his thirst for power and oil". -05:10
Dennis Bernstein: about Daniel Ellsberg (Salon.com), 1960's Marine Corp Commander, Pentagon official, turned whistleblower in 1969 when he released the 'Pentagon Papers'.. about his new biography, 'Secrets'.. Daniel: about current events, Rumsfeld, weapons inspectors.. about the intentions of Cheney, Wolfowitz, Perle, and Rumsfeld.. to deceive the American people.. Saddam does not have a suicidal urge.. unless faced with death by US action.. that's the way to get him to use any weapons of mass destruction he might have.. if we attack him, he will use all his weapons against Israel or the US.. I (fear) the world will see the use of nuclear weapons before the end of the year.. US wants regime change.. for the oil.. about the possibility of the use of nuclear weapons legitimized.. will greatly increase the threat of global destruction of the human species.. about Ellsberg's new book, 'Secrets'.. about the Gulf of Tonkin resolution.. more about the current situation.. Daniel: when I went to the press with the Pentagon Papers.. the NY Times injoined.. the Washington Post.. the Boston Globe.. all defying the Attorney General.. an amazing rebellion.. now.. we've seen the same kind of courage.. witness Scott Ritter.. and Colleen Ralley (sp?) of the FBI.. Talking to: the people in the government who know we're on a dangerous reckless course.. who have seen in writing, estimates to that result.. PLEASE COME FORWARD.. Dennis: like Nixon needed a special group?.. Daniel: we have real danger in the world.. Saddam launching a weapon against us, is not a real danger.. Congress should demand real assessments.. about nuclear whistleblower, Mordecai Vanunu.. a technical worker in the Israeli nuclear weapons program.. an Israeli.. gradually became convinced that the program could not be justified.. total censorship in Israel.. a total lie that Israel would not be the first to introduce nuclear weapons in Israel.. the number of Israel nuclear weapons in the hundreds.. what country in the world have the right to have hundreds of nuclear weapons?.. NOT ONE.. Vanunu was lured out of England by an Israeli agent to Israel, and kidnapped to Israel and imprisoned by a secret trial.. for 17 years.. he is a hero.. Israel's nuclear program increases the possibility that Israel itself will be destroyed by a nuclear weapon.. -53:30 Mary Bishop: wrapup Events: 1) Dennis reads his poetry 7PM Friday, Point Reyes Bookstore; 2) Rally to Stop the War 1PM tomorrow, Friday, Oakland Federal Building, 1301 Clay Street; and 3) Saturday, Sept 28; protest Stop the War on Iraq and Free Palestine, assemble Dolores Park 11AM; at Noon march to Civic Center for a rally.. info 415-861-7444 -54:44

URGENT WARNING: THE ISRAELI GOVERNMENT MAY BE CONTEMPLATING CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY.
We, members of Israeli academe, are horrified by US buildup of aggression towards Iraq and by the Israeli political leadership's enthusiastic support for it.
We are deeply worried by indications that the "fog of war" could be exploited by the Israeli government to commit further crimes against the Palestinian people, up to full-fledged ethnic cleansing.
The Israeli ruling coalition includes parties that promote "transfer" of the Palestinian population as a solution to what they call "the demographic problem". Politicians are regularly quoted in the media as suggesting forcible expulsion, most recently MKs Michael Kleiner and Benny Elon, as reported on Yediot Ahronot website on September 19, 2002. In a recent interview in Ha'aretz, Chief of Staff Moshe Ya'alon described the Palestinians as a "cancerous manifestation" and equated the military actions in the Occupied Territories with "chemotherapy", suggesting that more radical "treatment" may be necessary. Prime Minister Sharon has backed this "assessment of reality". Escalating racist demagoguery concerning the Palestinian citizens of Israel may indicate the scope of the crimes that are possibly being contemplated.
We call upon the International Community to pay close attention to events that unfold within Israel and in the Occupied Territories, to make it absolutely clear that crimes against humanity will not be tolerated, and to take concrete measures to prevent such crimes from taking place.

introduction: US peace delegation arrives in Iraq; interview w activist Barbara Lubin and Voices in the Wilderness leader, Kathy Kelly; upcoming SF & Houston protests against Bush's new war; Shoshone greatgrandmother has her cattle seized
-00:50 Robert Knight and the Knight Report.. Robert: Indian troops storm a Hindu temple, kill 2; Kashmir update, over a dozen killed; Ivory Coast foreigners evacuated; nobody buying Tony Blair's blather on Iraq; 70% of Britains don't want to join Iraq war, say it's all about oil; British journalists in Iraq; only Bush believes in the Blair Bush project
-06:22 Leslie Kean: British and US warplanes hit Iraq again; Voices in the Wilderness delegation now in Baghdad, now w delegate Barbara Lubin of the Middle East Childrens Alliance.. Barbara: we went to a boys high school and had a wonderful wonderful time; about a ribbon from kids in New Orleans, appreciated by the kids here.. the Iraqi people are cut off from the outside world.. Barbara: I was here a week before the Gulf War.. the Iraqis didn't believe that American would bomb them.. and they don't believe it now either.. the Iraqi people are a proud strong people.. about the vicious sanctions.. people beg us for medicine.. people with cancer, no chemotherapy drugs available.. hospital wards filled with suffering children.. very moving, so sad, unbelievable.. we had a meeting with Tariq Aziz, the second in command in Iraq.. said the weapons inspectors will be here October 15.. church leaders coming back in here.. a lot of peace activists coming in.. Voices will have a peace team here, working with the Middle East Childrens' Alliance.. how the weapons inspections work, and about the alternative team.. things look better than three years ago, the streets are clean.. the surface.. but below the surface, desperation.. people sick, can't get treatment.. we need to get rid of the sanctions.. Barbara: we are flying through the no fly zone tomorrow..
-16:46 Leslie: Kathy Kelly is the leader of Voices in the Wilderness, Nobel Peace Prize nominee.. and w Alexander Cockburn of Counterpunch.org.. Kathy: we want our team to feel encouraged.. NO NEW WAR AGAINT IRAQ!.. Cockburn: I haven't seen any evidence linking Bin Laden with Saddam Hussein.. Bush pushed this notion very hard, but it wouldn't fly.. Leslie: a big protest in SF this weekend.. Cockburn: the treatment of the Palestinians one of the most horrible situations in the world today.. knocking down houses, killing of kids, supported by the Bush admininstration.. Leslie: will the sanctions ever be lifted?.. Kathy: NT Times article this weekend by Wolfowitz.. children dying in front of their parents in Iraq everyday because of sanctions.. in Jenin, Israel didn't allow UN inspections.. no Israel child should ever suffer because of that, but half million Iraqi kids died horrible deaths because of sanctions against Iraq for refusing inspections.. Cockburn: about the coverage of Iraq sanctions in the media.. the US press has fallen down.. on accounts of Clinton and Bush betrayed every pledge ever made to Palestine.. the phoney deal Barak offered Arafat (Camp David).. but the deal lauded by the US press.. CNN desperate for a war to win back viewers.. Fox thrives on war.. the reporting generally very very poor.. fortunately there is a lot of alternative media.. Kathy: come out Saturday (in SF) protest and demonstrate.. help swell the ranks.. hopefully the mainstream media won't be able to ignore us.. Cockburn: I hope we can stop the invasion of Iraq.. the economy is in terrible shape.. demonstrations add to the feeling.. embolden politicians.. the more pressure you get, you raise the level of dissent.. very very important.. Event:
Sept 28; 11AM Dolores Park, noon march to SF Civic Center; 1PM rally there.. more info 415-861-7444 -28:48 Leslie: a protest too in Houston.. now w Texan activist Ken Freeland: Bush fundraiser tommorow evening at the Hyatt Regency.. Event: meet 3:30, Tranquility Park, Walker and Bagley Streets, Houston.. 4PM march to Hyatt Regency, Dallas and Lousianna Streets, let Bush know we don't want a war on the people of Iraq.. info 713-218-8063 or visit Houston Justice Not War.. Ken: many groups organizing.. everyplace Bush goes, people are saying we don't appreciate your war plans.. Event: 7PM tomorrow Penny Rosenwasser slide show on Palestine at La Pena Cultural Center in Berkeley.. -34:55 Leslie: Carrie and Mary Dann, two Shoshone sisters from Nevada.. right to graze cattle.. US *extinquished* the treaty.. agents seized 210 head of cattle, and threaten to seize 700 horses.. (Las Vegas Sun item) (link2).. Carrie: like a military zone, so many people carrying guns.. three big trucks, two small trucks.. loaded up the cattle.. a rumor two days prior the only warning.. now Christopher Soll of the Western Shoshone Defence Project.. Soll: in 1883.. Shoshone land extended from Snake River in Idaho to Mohave desert.. the Shoshone agreed to share their land.. agreed to adapt their culture.. in this treaty.. only a very small bit of land really left for the Shoshone.. the US government says all the land now federal land.. in violation of the treaty.. in 1980 the US government offered the Shoshone $27 million dollars.. rejected by the Shoshone.. a big rip off, typical of US history and behavior toward non-Europeans.. and the US saying the Danns owe a fine of about $3 million dollars.. the $27 million dollar offer dividing the Shoshone.. Mary and Carrie the rock of resistance.. for 30 years the US threatening the Danns with trespass and confiscation.. Carrie: I protest at Yucca Mountain nuclear waste.. most Shoshone very poor, a lot of alcoholism, drugs.. Soll: the reservations very small.. originally three small ranches that went bankrupt in the depression.. now 27 Shoshone families living on the same land.. 85% of Nevada declared federal land, exploited by one government agency or another.. free flowing hot springs.. development interests.. everybody making money off Western Shoshone lands, except the Shoshone.. Carrie: THIS IS DOMESTIC TERRORISM.. we're living in fear.. Soll: because of the US refusal to address these complaints, the Shoshone have brought these complaints to international courts.. the InterAmerican Commission on Human Rights report concluded that the Dann sisters' human rights have been violated.. right now we have an administration that only invoked international law when it happens to coincide with their preset agenda.. the basis of US Indian law.. any European to claim land could, because the Indians were 'non-Christian'.. still in effect.. Carrie: please help us defeat Bill 958.. Acadia Valley, CA. -55:18 Mary Bishop: wrapup.. -56:00 End today's show. today's review by john lionheart

interview with the legal advisor to the PLO; Colombia seeks more US dollars; woman brutalized by police for wearing Muslim dress
-01:00 Robert Knight and the Knight Report.. Robert:
Ivory Coast fighting flares, US troops enroute?; Iraq says full and unfettered access; Iraq tells Tony Blair to put up or shut up; Cairo says weapons of mass destruction cannot be hidden; UN resolution demands Israel to stop the seige of Arafat; Israeli death squads kill nine; Kofi Annon talks about peace and war in MLK venue (3 min audio excerpt)
-06:30 Leslie Kean: two years of the second intifada; 1800 dead; now w Michael Terrazi, legal advisor to the PLO, from Jerusalem.. Michael: I spoke to the people inside Arafat's compound; Sharon will not harm Arafat, he is a convenient scapegoat for Israel.. we don't have an exact list of people inside; the Israel claim that '50 terrorists' are inside is public relations.. five weeks ago, extremist Palestinian groups agreed to stop actions inside Israel.. that lasted five weeks, but in that time Israel killed 70 civilians.. and the extremist groups went back to business as usual.. today nine Palestinians killed by Israeli death squads.. Leslie: what is the relationship of Arafat to the Palestinian suicide bombers?.. Michael: why does Israel conduct these kind of raids?.. Sharon needs to keep the violence going, if peace breaks out, he will lose power.. Arafat is his scapegoat, while Israel keeps the violence going.. about yesterday's UN resolution demanding Israel stop attacking Arafat.. UN has been an impotent body when it comes to enforcing resolutions against Israel.. Pals say we don't have F16s, heliocopter gunships, we'll fight back anyway we can.. Leslie: Pals defying curfews, taking risks to peacefully demonstrate.. Michael: like in Nablus, under curfew most of the last two months.. like the 14 year old boy went to buy cigarettes, and shot four times in the chest.. four civilians in Ramallah shot to death for peacefully protesting.. about the Israeli flag now flying over Arafat's compound.. Michael: the next couple days.. Israel could decide to retreat, unlikely.. or they could kill Arafat and everyone else in the compound, also unlikely.. or they could negotiate a partial surrender.. Leslie: Israel moving the 'green line'?.. Michael: the 'green line' is the 1967 border.. what Israel has done the last 35 years, is moving, moving, moving the border.. now 40% of the West Bank settled by Israel.. now talk of building a fence.. Palestinians OK about a fence, but want Israel to build it on the green line.. but Israel building the fence even further than their present illegal encroachment.. one example, one Pal town, the fence cuts them off from their agricultural land.. Israel already holds 78% of historical Palestine, and are occupying 40%+ of the remaining 22% (totals about 87%).. about the danger that Israel will use a war on Iraq to 'transfer' (ie ethnic cleansing) of the Christian and Muslim Arabs in the West Bank.. Palestinians see the war on Iraq as an unfair war, in that UN resolutions against Israel are never enforced.. Event: protest Stop the War on Iraq and Free Palestine, Sat Sept 28 assemble Dolores Park 11am; at noon march to Civic Center for a rally.. more info 415-861-7444 -23:42 music break

Sandro: we've seen how the conflict has escalated, and many corporations have lobbied for the aid.. we've seen how the coca spraying has hurt agriculture, and the health of farmers, but not hurt coca production.. Bush admin requested 100 million dollars to protect a private oil company pipeline.. Daniel: the aid has served to escalate the conflict, and the aerial spraying has forced thousands of poor to flee their land.. Uribe has come to office with a mandate to strenght the military.. his first action was to enact a 'state of emergency' and increase taxes.. Sandro: the vote in the Congress delayed until after the election.. we need to get the word out about how the Colombian paramilitaries listed by the US as terrorist groups actually benefit from US aid money.. Event: this Friday, Colombia mobilization in the US.. a national day of action.. tonight a film Valencia near 21st, from a labor delegation to Colombia.. tomorrow night 7PM Womens Building in SF, a dance performance, theatre, music from Colombia.. and Friday at 4:30PM, 'bike for Colombia', more info 415-575-5534

The following inspirational piece by new paradigm author, Marianne Williamson, excerpted from her book, "A Return to Love" and quoted
by Nelson Mandela in his 1994 inaugural address:
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light--not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves--who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous ? Actually, who are you--not to be ? You are a child of God. Your playing small-- doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking, so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. We are liberated from our own fear; our presence automatically liberates others.
"The attitude of great poets is to cheer up slaves and horrify despots" ...Walt Whitman
My heart rouses
thinking to bring you news
of something that concerns you
and concerns many men. Look at
what passes for the new.
You will not find it there
but in despised poems.
It is difficult
to get the news from poems
yet men die miserably every day
for lack of what is found there.
-- William Carlos Williams
'The theory of a free press is that truth will emerge from free discussion, not that it will be presented perfectly and instantly in any one account.' Walter Lippmann
