Dennis Bernstein: introduction:
The Case Against War, w Professor Stephen Zunes; South African anti-apartheid veterans target Israel; Bush invokes Taft Hartley against West Coast ILWU
-03:50
Robert Knight and the Knight Report.. Robert:
Bush's petroleum-based administration calls for war, France and Russia yet demur.. US Congress.. Oakland Berkeley rep Barbara Lee says Iraq war powers violates international law, "we do not need to rush to war.. before the UN has even had a chance to implement inspections.. work with the UN to ensure Iraq is not building weapons of mass destruction.. I am introducing an amendment.. where is the proof Iraq poses clear imminent danger?.. the new doctrine of pre-emption, is this the example we want to set for India and Pakistan?.. it is our duty to seek non-military solutions."
-08:25 Dennis: about Bush's speech, and the bill before Congress.. now w Professor Stephen Zunes of SF State, author of Tinderbox, U.S. Foreign Policy and the Roots of Terrorism.. Prof Zunes: Bush did not make a case for war.. this is not going to be like Desert Storm, a war fought in the open desert.. this will be in an urban area.. 8 divisions of Republican guards still intact.. US will bomb Baghdad, a heavily populated city.. if Saddam feels he has nothing to lose.. an invasion against Saddam would probably prompt him to use whatever weapons of mass destruction that he does have.. CIA officials helped facilitate Saddam's use of chemical weapons against Iran and the Kurds.. Saddam Hussein is a coward.. Dennis: Rumsfeld and then VP George Bush aware of Saddam's use of chemical weapons.. Prof Zunes: Bush mentioned Saddam's support for terrorist, Abu Nidal.. not mentioned: at the height of his support for Abu, the USA dropped Iraq from the list of terrorist nations in order to export to Iraq material to build chemical weapons.. Dennis: Iraq got low cost agriculture loans.. six months before Iraq invaded Kuwait, US taught Iraq and Israel how to detonate weapons of mass destruction.. Gulf War Syndrome.. our soldiers came home covered with the chemicals US helped Iraq acquire.. Prof Zunes: there could be street fighting.. most Iraqis would be happy to see Saddam dethroned.. but he may have as many as a million followers, could put up post resistance.. Kurds in the North, and Shiites in the south could try to break away.. would cause problems for Turkey, and.. Dennis: we have seen some bloody attacks by Israel on civilians.. Prof Zunes: the Israelis would use an Iraq invasion maybe for ethnic cleansing.. you can imagine the reaction in the Arab world.. Al-Jazeera TV.. bombing of Baghdad, Israel attacking Palestinian civilians.. Prof Zunes: if Bush thinks this is making the world safe for democracy, he needs to think again..
-21:00 music break -23:10 Dennis: a growing anti-apartheid movement against Israeli apartheid in Palestine.. while the world was confronting the apartheid government of South Africa, Israel solidifying its ties to South Africa.. now w Niam Jenna (sp?) of the South African Palestinian Solidarity Movement.. Niam: if the US attacks Iraq, it would create a new rule for the world.. gives the license for other nations to do whatever they want to their neighbors.. in the Palestinian context, translated by Sharon.. license for Sharon to do whatever he wants to the Palestinians.. I was in Palestine the week of 9/11 and within hours of the attack on NYC, Israel invaded Palestinian cities.. this time, the big danger is *transfer*, ie ethnic cleansing.. Dennis: when the ANC was fighting South Africa, they were referred to by the west as 'terrorists'.. Niam speaks tonight 7PM UC Berkeley 711 Barrows Hall.. tomorrow Boalt Hall, and tomorrow night at SF State theatre, more info: 510-334-5507.. Niam: one thing South Africans remember that Cheney called to leave Mandela in prison.. we were all called terrorists, now the same thing happening to Palestinians.. about the links between Israel and apartheid South Africa.. also links between ANC and the Palestinians.. a deep sense within black South Africans, here is another apartheid struggle.. the Palestinians even going through worse than we did.. white South Africa shared knowledge with Israel to build nuclear weapons.. when Mordecai Vanunu (link2) was arrested and convicted, he blew the whistle on the links between the two states.. about the apartheid parallels between Israel and South Africa.. in South Africa rights and priviledges flowed from one's being white.. in Israel rights and priviledges flow from one's being Jewish.. we managed to convince the world that apartheid is a bad thing.. Palestinians being told that apartheid is the solution.. bantustans.. comparison between the repression of black people in South Africa, and repression of Palestinians in Israel and historical Palestine.. the notion of collective punishment.. in South Africa we didn't fear collective punishment.. my mother did not have to fear when my brother was killed by the police.. common though for Palestinians.. family members arrested, tortured, deported, killed.. new strategies to win over Israel. -40:00 music break
 -40:50 Dennis: lockout of west coast longshoremen by the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) continues.. Bush to invoke Taft Hartley (good WSJ article), now w Clarence Thomas, treasurer of the International Longshore & Warehouse Union.. (ILWU).. Thomas: Taft Hartley passed in 1947, passed by an anti-labor Congress over Truman's veto.. forces us to work under old agreements.. a slave labor law.. a 'lockout' is an employer strike.. our employer elected to lock out the ILWU.. got 36 hours.. 10,000 dock workers lives disrupted.. then when we came back, management said we were'nt working fast enough.. locked us out again.. what happens to the ILWU, very much a precurser to the rest of US unions.. we have been out front on many issues.. the first union to come out against the Vietnam War.. we refused to load or unload cargo to apartheid South Africa.. to Chile after Allende's murder.. the Charleston Five.. a progressive history to support repressed people.. Dennis: what happens now?.. Thomas: the Labor Department called for a 30 day cooling off period, the employers rejected it.. they were seeking to get Bush to intervene.. head of 'Homeland Security', Tom Ridge contacted our union.. like J Edgar Hoover contacting Harry Bridges (bio) (H.B. Project).. a threat to the union.. background checks for dockworkers.. Dennis: now union issues become terrorist threats.. now what?.. Thomas: ILWU working closely with community organizations, with the AFl-CIO.. with progressive anti-globalist groups.. with RainForest Action Network, Earth Island Institute, Global Exchange.. we're working carefully.. Taft Hartley requires a hearing.. we're hoping the PMA has to reconsider.. now w Karen Pickett, community activist.. Karen: Bush using fears of homeland security.. Maxxam Lumber trying to get Homeland Security to classify tree-sitters as terrorists.. about Walmart, Gap, Target supporting management.. a lot of support for the port workers.. we were proud to be at the picket line yesterday with the dockworkers.. a demonstration at the Gap.. we're starting up an 'Emergency Response Network'.. Taft Hartley will constrain the port workers, but not us activists.. call 415-821-6545 to hook into the Emergency Response Network .. ten things you can do: come out to the picket line; come out to the picket line; come out to the picket line; come out to the picket line; come out to the picket line; come out to the picket line; come out to the picket line; come out to the picket line; come out to the picket line; come out to the picket line.. yesterday Utah Phillips came out.. Continuing Action: come out to the ILWU picket line and party, at the foot of 7th Street in Oakland.. fun and solidarity enhancing.. Thomas: we are the most progressive union in the world.. we have many pledges of support.. from longshormen around the world.. international solidarity of unions..

what you can do from your home to stop the war on Iraq
Monday, Oct 7, 2002 - Start Audio
-00:00 Dennis Bernstein: introduction:
Israeli missile strike kills 14 Palestinian civilians including four children; interviews with Netta Jorgesen in Gaza; International Solidarity Member, Adam Shapiro; Professor of Political Science, As'ad Abu-Khalil
-00:58 Dennis: US supplied arms used for terrorist missile attack (Pal Chronicle story) (UK Independent story) (BBC story) (BBC audio and video report 1:48 minutes.).. now w Netta Jorgensen (sp?) of the Palestinian Center for Human Rights in Gaza City.. Netta: last night at midnight.. Israeli forces entered Khan Younis city (background: Harpers Magazine, Gaza Diary, page 7), 14 heavily armored jeeps and tanks supported by helicopters; fighting for four hours.. one Palestinian man killed.. at 4:15 the Israelis left.. people came out on the street.. then a Cobra or Apache homicide heliocopter fired a missile.. 14 killed including 4 children; 85 wounded including 17 children..
List of the murdered Palestinians include: 1. Mohammed Hassan al-Astal, 15, killed by shrapnel throughout the body;
2. Abdullah Walid Salah, 16, killed by shrapnel throughout the body;
3. Ahmed 'Abdul Ra'ouf al-Astal, 16, killed by shrapnel throughout the body;
4. Fares 'Abdul Nasser Daoud al-Zaqzouq, 17, killed by shrapnel in the head;
5. Haitham Mousa Abu al-Naja, 27, killed by shrapnel throughout the body;
6. Ussama Mohammed 'Ali 'Aabdin, 23, killed by shrapnel throughout the body;
7. Eihab Helmi Dhib Khalaf, 22, killed by shrapnel throughout the body;
8. Ayman Mohammed Saqer, 35, killed by shrapnel throughout the body;
9. Mohammed Mustafa Sadiq, 20, killed by shrapnel throughout the body;
10. Jamal Fathi Muhareb, 18, killed by with several live bullets in the neck and the chest;
11. Mohammed Farhan Shaloula, 23, killed with a live bullet in the back;
12. Rahima Hassan 'Ali Salama, 50, shot by Israeli soldiers in her home, bled to death later;
13. 'Abdul Fattah Ali Suleiman al-Sallout, 40, was wounded in the chest by a heavy caliber bullet fired by an Israeli attack helicopter and later died...
Netta: also Israel tried to arrest one man.. went to his home.. the mother, Rahima Hassan 'Ali Salama, opened the door, fearing assault.. the Israelis told her to shut the door, then they fired through and killed her, and wounded her 15 year old son.. about the reaction in the community.. funerals, demonstrations, people are mourning, angry.. about the neighborhood, very crowded, junction of three roads.. no room between the houses, built together.. two, three story houses.. one missle went through a house into a bedroom.. Dennis: Israelis say they're in the business of killing terrorists.. Netta: most all of the people killed and wounded were not militants.. they were curious to see what had happened, if anyone was hurt or killed.. just normal people.. there are problems getting adequate medical equipment and medicine into Gaza.. some of the seriously injured might die.. 23 people still in the hospital.. Netta: life in Gaza is very difficult, impossible to leave the Strip, very crowded, divided into three pieces by the Israeli military.. most people cannot get to work, cannot get to university, farmers can not transport their products.. most people were working in Israel before, now Israel has closed the borders.. 65% unemployed, malnutrition rampant.. Israelis now say three people must be in a car to cross a checkpoint.. little kids offer to ride through for a little money.. try to sneak back, (sometimes killed).. about the attack last night, the only thing I've heard from Israel is that they blamed the people for being in the street..my concern is that is happening quite often.. and the media hardly mentions it unless a lot of people are killed like last night
-18:28 Dennis: more about the illegal Israeli occupation of Palestine.. with Adam Shapiro of International Solidarity Movement (ISM).. Event: Adam speaking tonight at 145 Dwinnell Hall UC Berkeley 7:30PM.. Adam: a situation all too common.. this got attention because of the outrageousness of the attack.. I've been in Palestinian cities after an Israeli assault, and yes, people do come out in the street to check on their neighbors.. it seems to me that the Israelis were repelled.. and then an officer decided to get even.. supported by US, the Israelis consider all Palestinians as terrorist, no matter how old or young.. one of the options for Iraq, attack it like the Israelis attacked Jenin.. if you attack an urban city, you are attacking peoples' homes.. everybody has a right to defend their homes.. US military on the ground taking notes in Jenin during the assault.. Dennis: the Marine Times wrote that the US special forces were in Jenin.. Adam: about the Divestment conference in Michigan this weekend.. it's not about the existence of the state of Israel, not about being or not being Jewish.. about the illegal occupation of Palestine.. campaign modeled after South Africa.. the underlying attitude similar to colonial supremacy.. we need to take more action to force Israel to comply with international law.. Israeli are in fear, but they have to ask themselves why this fear.. the underlying reason is the occupation.. continuing and expanding.. getting rid of the occupation, the only way to get rid of the fear.. normal live for Palestinians nowadays is being locked in your house 24/7.. and living in great fear.. Dennis: olives an important crop for Palestinians, the harvest coming up.. Adam: olives an important crop, a good year for olives this year.. farmers land has been confiscated, or the land is near settlements, and settlers or army shoot at Palestinians.. everywhere is under curfew.. ISM is working to escort farmers to their fields.. they require international protection.. it would be great if the US or the UN would come, but they won't.. Dennis: how did you get involved, why? as a Jew.. Adam: trying to build bridges between Arab and Israeli kids.. I was on the ground when Sharon invaded the Temple Mount.. I saw that lethal force was used against Palestinian protestors, unless Internationals were present.. American Jews need to separate support for Israel, from support for what Israel is doing.. Sharon fighting an expansionist war for land and to get rid of the Palestinian people.. about 'transfer' (ie .ethnic cleansing) talked about openly in Israel.. Jane's Intelligence Review located Israeli forces in western Iraq.. maybe they are looking for areas to *resettle* Palestinian people.. even here in the US, Dick Armey called for 'transer'.. a hardcore Zionist agenda to find 'land for people for a people without land'.. we know Palestine was not empty, but the Zionists want to make it so.. Dennis: Jordan says it will militarily resist an Israeli purge of the Palestinians.. Adam: to join us on the ground in Palestine, or support us, see our website: www.PalSolidarity.org.. more about the divestment campaign, see: Students for Jusice in Palestine.. about what the US is creating.. I've always felt safe in the Arab world, but it's becoming a world very unsafe for our children to live in. -38:28 music break Phil Oaks, One More Parade -41:08 Dennis: now w As'ad AbuKhalil, author of the new book, Bin Laden, Islam, and America's New "War on Terrorism" (order from Cody's Online), and professor of Political Science at CSU Stanislaus and Center for Middle Eastern Studies, UC Berkeley.. Professor AbuKhalil: If Saddam is the menacing force that Bush says he is, why didn't he bring it up during his campaign two years ago?.. there are already a nuclear arsenal in Israel, but Bush is not concerned.. the inspectors were ready to do their job, but stopped by US.. the last inspection team infiltrated by US spies.. Bush says it is certain there will be a war.. US and Britain provoking.. Israel provoking the Palestinians.. Dennis: why does the US want this war.. AbuKhalil: the document US released (National Security Strategy).. the US wants empire.. the defence budget structured for endless war.. any power tries to match US force they will be dealt with by US military.. the US wants to put another Karsai in place, not democracy.. the US has no record supporting human rights in Arab world.. Saudi Arabia the most undemocratic, sexist, anti-Semitic in the world.. about the 'Iraqi opposition' that the US is courting.. these generals were the torturers and the worst human rights offenders of Iraq.. a record of blood and torture against the Kurds.. these are people going to deliver democracy to Iraq? Fat chance.. when the Kurds were gassed Cheney and Rumsfeld were chummy with Saddam.. Dennis: how will this play on the Arab street?.. AbuKhalil: already very negative.. the governments friendly to the US, repressive as they are, afraid of their own population.. the Israelis almost giddy about what will happen.. Dennis: about the missile attack in Gaza last night?.. AbuKhalil: the campaign of war and terror launched by Israel.. goes on.. about the death of children.. the US people rightly horrified by the death of Israeli children by bombs, but why no comment on the Palestinian children killed.. why never the term 'terrorism' applied to the Israeli actions, the Palestinians are terrified.. about the discussion in Israel about expulsion of Palestinians, now openly discussed.. contemplated openly.. great fear in Palestine and Jordan.. the US planning a 'new map' for the Middle East.. an unstopable flareup of ethnic fighting in store.. -54:42 Mary Bishop: wrapup -55:28

PUEBLO, Lets Get Free, other groups spearheading a campaign against FF.. $70 million dollars for these 100 cops, could be spent much better.. many ministers have come out against FF.. would create a tremendous opening for progressives.. time for the city government of Oakland to get on the side of the people, and not the incarcerators.. -00:50
Robert Knight and the Knight Report.. Robert:
Bush now says you can't always want what you get.. running away from inspection agreement, war powers, and now.. regime change.. Colin Powell says regime change no longer necessary.. disarmament now the goal.. Powell's 180 degree turnaround seconded by British Prime Minister, and American echo, Tony Blair.. bewildering twin tactical reversals.. ARi flescher has even stopped calling for bullets for Saddam.. what does Bush really want, except for the oil?.. Israelis practice kidnapping and exiling operation against Arafat.. Bush says Jerusalem the capitol of Israel.. Barghouti raises heck in court.. Philippines attack blamed on terrorists.. in NY an anti-North Korea leafleter sprays the UN with bullets.
-04:40
Leslie Kean: about the 1985 Oklahoma murder of Kathy Wilhoit, mother of two.. husband Greg arrested and found guilty on two dentists' testimony that a bite mark on her breast matched his teeth.. his alcoholic brain damaged lawyer presented no defence.. he was convicted, and spent 5 years on death row.. finally 12 expert forensic witnesses testified that he could not have done it.. exonerated, he was released.. now w husband Greg Wilhoit.. how he was wrongfully accused, and sentenced to death.. how Greg didn't want to live out his life in prison.. Greg: "I encouraged them to give me a death sentence,".. now w new lawyer, Mark Barrett: his old lawyer, Mr Briggs, was the town drunk.. stories about him were astounding.. a bar association complaint against him filed the same month as Greg's trial.. an expert witness hired by Greg's parents, but not called by Briggs.. the entire board of 'bite marks' pathology testified that Greg could not have been the biter.. numerous problems with the only evidence.. one expert said Greg's bite mark drastically different.. the original dentists.. made mistatements.. false testimony.. Mark: no repercussions against the so-called experts or prosecutors.. Leslie: your response, Greg?.. Greg: the one dentist *expert*.. nothing gained by being angry.. you have a choice, you can let it eat at you like a cancer.. I'm not going to do that.. my luck had gone south long before I got to death row.. I knew the experience on death row would be interesting.. i still have nightmares.. my best friend did twelve years and came within five days of dying.. the legislature voted 91 to 1 to award Greg a meager $200,000 for his lost life.. vetoed by the governor.. Greg: I don't understand why that was vetoed, I don't understand why the prosecutor, the government never apologized.. I don't see how they can sleep at night.. Mark: at first Greg laid low.. now he speaks out as much as he can.. Greg: how I got started being an abolitionist.. two years ago Mark called me up, wanted me to come to Tulsa and speak at a Law Convention.. it went off quite well.. but was very emotional.. it took a lot of nerve to get up in front of judges and lawyers.. I spoke at a church.. I'm a Christian, at churches I empathize the spiritual aspect.. people are horrified at my story.. this issue needs more attention.. all my life I was an advocate of the death penalty.. even for the first three years on death row, I was an advocate of the death penalty, and the only advocate of 122 men on death row.. I began to get a lot of personal fulfillment out of speaking.. I am trying to change the world, my itty bitty corner of it.. two guys walked up to me, Roger Stafford and Chuck Colman the nicest guys you'd ever want to meet.. greated had a preference for killing people.. I developed a genuine fondness for these guys.. he went off to be murdered.. you say goodbye.. on TV they were counting off like news year eve.. I was overwhelmed with grief.. a moment of clarity, not like before or since.. the world wasn't a safer place.. I changed my mind about the death penalty.. the cornerstone of Christianity is forgivemness.. an epiphany.. I haven't been the same man since..
Event: Wednesday Oct 9, hear Greg Wilhoit, at Angelical Hall of Domincan Univerity, San Rafael, Marin County, CA, also w Bud Welch. topic: moratorium on the death penalty.. more info 415-461-3662 Mark: wrongful convictions are epidemic.. 1 in 7 convictions are flawed.. especially on death row cases.. because of pressure and awards for prosecutors and police.. Greg: final comments: I would like people to come out and see me, you won't sleep that night. being 'tough on crime' that sounds good.. but people if you're not part of the solution you're.. these people are being murdered in your name.. you are complicit unless you join the protest..
-38:00 Leslie: now w CA death penalty moratorium activists, Terry MacCaffery coordinator with Amnesty International and Buff Wittman Bradley of Marin County Against The Death Penalty.. more info: 415-461 3662.. Terry: or call me 408-257-4611
-42:38 Leslie: 34 foreign ministers going to Ecuador to negiotiate the FTAA later this month. now w Justin Ruben author of The Fight For Everything.. Justin: the FTAA.. Free Trade Area America.. an extention of NAFTA.. NAFTA on steroids.. a million small farmers in Mexico have lost their farms because of US dumping subsidized agriculture.. about the Canadian companies suiing CA for billions for daring to phase out the gasoline additive, MTBE.. about neoliberalism, cuts to critical social services..

George Bush about to get a license to kill.. Congressional leaders state their belief that Bush will resolve the crisis via diplomacy.. Bush holds press conference in the Rose Garden, while protestors yell outside.
-04:44 Dennis Bernstein: the impact on the region reverberated with the US attacks in Afghanistan.. now an hour with M.J. Akbar (link2), author of The Shade of Swords; Jihad and the Conflict between Islam and Christianity (link2) (order from Cody's Online) reknowned Indian scholar and founder of Asian Age and two others newspapers.. Akbar: NEVER UNDERESTIMATE SADDAM HUSSEIN, TYRANNY ALONE DOES NOT KEEP ONE IN POWER, HE IS CLEVER AND CRAFTY.. particularly when one is not sure of the consistency of his friends.. the first mistake Americans did is announce their intentions so early (four months ago).. Saddam waited to the last minute to give his counterpunch (accepting inspections again).. a sucker punch .. it will be difficult for the United States to climb out of this hole.. India has 70 Iraqs inside it.. Iraq has always had a pro-India attitude.. now that Hussein has allowed weapons inspectors in.. the importance of credibility.. a war without the kind of bountaries that most wars have.. reaction to this war could take the form of global terrorism.. when Bush was running for president, he couldn't remember the name of the leader of Pakistan.. Dennis: the US not hunting for terrorists in Saudi Arabia.. Akbar: if support for terrorism is the reason for regime change, why not attack the Saudis?.. Dennis: the 'Shade of Swords'?.. Akbar: "Paradise is under the shade of swords".. a quote from the Prophet, but his Jihad is a Jihad against injustice.. Jihad is not an irresponsible war.. the ten rules of Jihad: 1) TERRORISM HAS NO PLACE IN JIHAD, YOU CAN NOT KILL AN INNOCENT MAN, NOR A WOMAN OR CHILD, NOT EVEN A PALM TREE OR CROPS.. Dennis: Americans cannot not tell the difference between Osama bin Laden and Islam.. Akbar: after the US created the mujahadeen.. and the mujadeen defeated the Soviets.. bin Laden said that 'if I with my Jihad can defeat the most powerful army in the world, why can I not defeat the USA?'.. about the trial for the first attackers of the WTO.. one said 'I dream of the day when I shall watch these twin towers topple over like dominoes'.. the Israeli Palestinian conflict a template for the war on terrorism.. has widened into South Asia.. between Afghanistan and Bangladesh live half the world's Muslims.. much bigger fish out there floating and still free (in Pakistan).. about the conversion of Pakistan into a religious state.. a state that has become a breeding ground for terrorism and fundamentalism.. Dennis: US with Pakistan war against the Soviets.. and now this latest war.. Akbar: ONE OF THE GREAT PROBLEMS OF AMERICAN FOREIGN POLICY.. AMERICA DOES NOT COMPLETE A WAR, DECLARES VICTORY EARLY AND LEAVES NOT UNDERSTANDING WHAT IT HAS LEFT.. TO MANAGE A VICTORY IS FAR FAR MORE DIFFICULT THAN TO MANAGE A BATTLE.. about the bombing of Kanduhar, great precision of American arms.. with this kind of superpower ability, the Taliban is not removed from Afghanistan.. *president* Karsai almost assassinated by a former Taleban.. IT IS THE DUTY OF MUSLIM GOVERNMENTS TO EDUCATE THE YOUNG THAT TERRORISM IS NOT THE ANSWER.. America not closed one front, wants to open another.. have you thought of the consequences?.. not of losing in Iraq, but of winning?.. .. oil industry negotiating with the Taleban for years, an investigation might come nearer the white house than you think.. the VP involved.. a very strong feeling that this war has nothing to do with morality, but has everything to do with profit.. in 1991 the world community supported the US because Iraq was wrong to occupy a foreign country, now the US wants to occupy a foreign country.. Karsai one of Afghan's oil negotiators, is that a shock or what?.. Afghanistan has been invaded four times.. twice by the British, once by the Russians, now again in 2001.. about the similarities.. Kabul fell without a fight all four times.. then it took two or three years for a reaction to develop.. -33:24 Dennis: still w M.J. Akbar: about the conflict going on in Kashmir.. for fifty years.. caused by British partition.. like where America was a hundred years ago.. rule by lynch mob.. one of the biggest mistakes India made in Kashmir, denied democracy, rigged elections.. WE NEED TO EXTEND THE SPIRIT OF DEMOCRACY AND TOLERANCE ESPECIALLY TO TROUBLED REGIONS.. about the difference between secular and religious states.. about Israel.. THE GREAT GENOCIDE AGAINST THE JEWS, NOT DONE BY MUSLIMS, BUT DONE BY CHRISTIANS.. TORTURE AGAINST THEM, THEN HITLER.. (THOSE EVENTS) DEMANDED THAT THE JEWS BE GIVEN THE RIGHT TO DEFEND THEMSELVES.. AND NOW THE TIME HAS COME TO GIVE THE PALESTINIANS A STATE AS WELL.. Dennis: Sharon celebrating the war on Iraq.. thinking about the 'transfer' of the Palestinians.. Akbar: astounding that the Israelis would think they could get away with fascism.. Jihad not an invitation to kill but an invitation to die.. young people strapped with bombs.. is the hard fact to bear.. two tradegies intertwined.. why is it the person who entered the camps of Sabra and Chatila, now elected head of a powerful state?.. Christianity and Islam, both are very old religions.. long periods in which the two have shared knowledge, shared science.. about the 'bloodless' crusade..

Professor Chatterji: terrorists and state violence.. in Marin County this Sunday, a Forum On Peace, incredible individuals, Americans need to play a role as maintenance of Freedom, active participatory citizenship.. feels like the war on terrorism being pushed to become a war on Islam..
-20:58 Leslie Kean: Iraq.. now w Media Beat's Norman Solomon of the Institute for Public Accuracy.. just returned from Iraq, part of a delegation.. Norman: the word from Vienna a fairly successful meeting between Iraqis and the UN inspection teams.. the White House does not really want inspections.. the Bush regime hell bent on attacking Iraq with huge military force.. Leslie: sanctions are a weapon of mass destruction.. Norman: upsetting to go from room to room in the hospital and see kids with cancer and getting no treatment because of US imposed sanctions.. a human reality, to 5,000 children dying every month.. we got to Baghdad in mid September.. to establish a face-to-face dialoque.. Nick Rahall of West Virginia went.. former US Senator James Abourezk (link2) of South Dakota.. also Jim Jennings of Conscience International.. people at the grass roots level have to every legal thing we can think to stop this war.. about the media language used about war... Norman: numbing distancing of human realities.. a huge crime against humanity being planned by the US.. imagine a two thousand pound bomb falling on San Francisco or Oakland or your home town.. really crucial we get in the same place.. fan out.. all news media need to hear from us.. and put pressure on so-called political leaders.. Institute for Public Accuracy.. Event: FORUM ON PEACE: Sunday, October 6, 2002 from 2pm to 6pm at at the Showcase Theater at the Marin Civic Center, San Rafael (20 minutes north of San Francisco), 415-389-0163; tickets: 415-472- more info: www.BiggerThanMe.com

-00:00 Leslie Kean: introduction: 350,000 march in London; *National Security Strategy*; rightwing *Campus Watch* website targets US academics
-00:48 Robert Knight and the Knight Report.. Robert: Iraqi weapons inspection talks progressing well, bad news for Bush's plan, Anglo American bombers hit Iraq; Russia and France do not support Bush's UN resolution; Inspection head Blix says team to be in Iraq by December.. Ivory Coast two week old crisis.. 3 Palestinians killed including two children, one ten years old , one thirteen years old, one Israel soldier killed.. Israeli special forces already in Western Iraq.
-05:08 Leslie: perhaps as many as 450,000 people flooding the streets of London.. now w organizer, Mike Marksey (sp?), of the Stop the War Coalition.. Mike: one of the most remarkable mass demonstrations in European history; we want Blair to break from Bush now, we will not support a war but in Iraq, an extraordinary mix of activists and ordinary people who just don't like what's going down.. it's bloody unifying.. we assembled just norht of the river Thames, past Whitehall, Trifalgar square, Hyde Park.. the march was four and a half hours long, all entirely peaceful.. only one arrest.. extremely colourful.. banners, flags, signs.. a huge amount of hard work to organize on little money.. we spent just 40,000 pounds on organizing this.. Mike: message to Bush: 'We in Britain will not support this war'.. part of an overwhelming global resistance.. without doubt, we will keep the pressure on Blair..
-12:47 Pledge to Resist: ..not in our name.. no more transfusions of blood for oil.. not by our hands will we supply weapons for the annihilation of families on foreign soil.. we pledge to make common cause with the people of the world.. another world is possible and we pledge to make it real.. ,read by Paul
-14:20 Leslie: the new "National Security Strategy" adopted by Bush.. of preemtive strikes, report by author David Armstrong author of the story.. David: the plan is for the US to rule the world.. at the time of the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1992, Bush the first, Wolfowitz, Cheney, Powell.. to insure that the US could dominate the world, prevail in any situtation, and not be threatened in any way.. Richard Perl, Paul Wolfowitz.. America's imperial moment.. in 1992 it met with bad reviews, protests around the world.. it was shelved for the 1992 election.. unilateralism.. penchant for pre-emption.. using low yield nuclear weapons.. the best we can hope for, is.. the US sending a clear message to the world that this is US policy from now on, saying, "we decide the targets".. read David's report in Harpers Magazine at your local newsstand and library.. more info www.publicEDcenter.org

-35:50 Leslie: college campuses.. about the rightwing http://www.campuswatch.org website.. blacklisting US academics *critical of Israel*.. listed on the website, is Snahal Shengavi, teacher at UCB of a class titled, The Politics and Poetics of Palestinians Resistance.. Snahal: all of the professors on the list targeted, we've been receiving hate mail, our families have been contacted.. about the website.. caused the hate mail by.. unbelievable amounts of pressure to change the way I was teaching the course.. I am quite proud of the class.. the students putting forth compelling ideas.. a McCarthyite tactic.. our response: now so many unlisted acedemics (like me) are writing the website, and demanding to be included on the list too.. the president of Harvard said that calling for the divestment from Israel is anti-Semitic.. had a paralyzing effect on free speech.. those issues have to be separated.. those issues have to be openly debated and publicly addressed.. now w UCB Professor Judith Butler: I've seen journalists when they start to do a piece about Palestine.. they get real nervous worrying about the truth *offending* pro-Zionist elements in their lives.. another paralyzing effect on free speech.. -54:00 Rainjita Geesler, wrapup: yesterday (most probably because of the recent press attention, including KPFA, Flashpoints, and FSRN) the aforementioned website abruptly quit blacklisting college acedemics for being *too* pro-Palestinian. It now focuses on progressive organizations..

The following inspirational piece by new paradigm author, Marianne Williamson, excerpted from her book, "A Return to Love" and quoted
by Nelson Mandela in his 1994 inaugural address:
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light--not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves--who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous ? Actually, who are you--not to be ? You are a child of God. Your playing small-- doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking, so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. We are liberated from our own fear; our presence automatically liberates others.
"The attitude of great poets is to cheer up slaves and horrify despots" ...Walt Whitman
My heart rouses
thinking to bring you news
of something that concerns you
and concerns many men. Look at
what passes for the new.
You will not find it there
but in despised poems.
It is difficult
to get the news from poems
yet men die miserably every day
for lack of what is found there.
-- William Carlos Williams
'The theory of a free press is that truth will emerge from free discussion, not that it will be presented perfectly and instantly in any one account.' Walter Lippmann
