Friday, Nov 29, 2002 - Start Audio -00:00 Dennis Bernstein: introduction: we devote the entire hour to a recent speech by Robert Fisk -00:46 Dennis: last Friday award winning journalist spoke at Berkeley's First Congregational Church.. (audio tape) Robert: (Robert makes a great mobile phone confession/joke).. 'LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, SEPT 11, 2001 DID NOT CHANGE THE WORLD'.. this has become one of the outstanding lies the media has been telling.. though it may give George Bush an excuse to change the world [but that should be exposed for the pretext it is].. on Sept 12 of this year, I went to the UN General Assembly to have a look at Mr. Bush.. I saw him say the US has nothing against *the people* of Iraq.. I was very frightened.. (Bush and Bush Senior say that every time they go to war against a country, killing innocent people).. I saw America wants to reshape the map of the Middle East.. last map when Britain and France divided up the spoils of WWI.. if a new Iraq war starts, our TV will use the term, 'war on terrorism'.. after 9/11, vapid, hopeless journalism.. newscasts.. obscured reality and dishonored the dead.. about a journalist Robert saw on TV wearing a Marine Corp helmet.. news colleagues accepting orders from the military.. Hiraldo on TV wearing a pistol, saying he wanted to shoot Osama bin Laden.. not a war on terror, but a war on US enemies, and Israel's enemies as well.. Newsweek headline: Osama the 'evil' one.. now the media invoking divine speech [ENRON GOOD, OSAMA EVIL].. about the thousands of innocent Afghans killed by our bombs.. and when did we first hear about the alledged Iraqi connection to 9/11?.. our journalists were silent.. the NY Times and the Washington Post ran stories recently one day on the supposed links Iraq to Al-Qiada.. I noticed seven stories say the same thing in the first paragraph.. ", officials say." ALL ANONYMOUS SOURCES.. how did target Kabul become target Baghdad?.. when Tony Blair says there 'must be a blood price paid'.. no journalist points out the the blood price will most certainly be paid by others than Tony Blair.. 'blood debt' a common term anymore.. to its credit the Nation Magazine article details the Israeli lobby men now in positions of power in Bush's administration.. about Colin Powell's press converence in Iraqi Kurd country.. the language of journalism has fallen in step with government.. now in all stories about Afghanistan, the US is always hunting 'remnants' of Al-Qiada.. the NY Times article.. US planning a military government in Iraq.. General Tommy Franks to play the roll of General McCarther.. but Japan had an Emperor Hirohito.. Franks will have to play that role too.. - 17:00 Robert: about the sloppy planning for post war Iraq.. about the beating Robert Fisk received from an angry mob in Afghanistan.. Robert gives examples of media distortion of the event, and censorship of news stories about it.. and the 'Why?' question, one of the four pillars of news reporting, but 'Why?' not allowed to be asked anymore, when Western targets are attacked.. especially in the immediate days after 9/11.. about the slander and attacks Fisk received in the mass media, for writing a column stating the reasons given by bin Laden for wanting to attack America ('the Why?').. THE FIRST THING POLICE DO AT A CRIME SCENE IS LOOK FOR A MOTIVE.. BUT WE'RE NOT ALLOWED TO LOOK FOR MOTIVE IN THE CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY 9/11.. about Fisk's meeting with bin Laden in Afghanistan after the mujahadeen had beaten back the Russians.. bin Laden wounded six times fighting for the west.. all his camps built by the CIA.. Robert: "he came in, live as a cat".. he said, 'we beat the Russians, I pray that Ahlah will permit us to turn America into a shadow of itself'.. I don't think he climbs to the top of a mountain and pulls out a cell phone, and says 'Plan B'.. but his power is in his words.. about bin Laden's demand, resonates in the Arab World.. without the real abuses suffered by Arabs under their US supported repressive regimes, bin Laden would be just another lonely 'voice in the wilderness'.. -33:30 Robert: about the Gulf War.. tanks burning.. Robert: 'a friend of mine in Iraq developed cancer, then her husband and three other members of the family died of cancer too..' about research Fisk undertook on the toxic damage to Iraq.. (gives many details).. about the discovery of the use and hazards of Depleted Uranium (DU) used in Iraq.. shells with DU are what set the tanks on fire.. about Gulf War Syndrome in Gulf War veterans.. in 1998, vegetables fields near Basra.. Robert: I visited the hospital there.. (slide show of cancer victims, deformed and disabled children with descriptions).. an explosion of child hood cancers.. Robert: you would think that would turn a few heads in the media.. I asked a collegue, 'are you interested in the story'.. his reply, 'Bob, I'm not writing about Iraqi babies'.. about the since proven dangers of DU and about the deletion of DU from the public narrative.. WE ARE PREVENTED FROM KNOWING THE TRUTH.. COVERT STRUGGLES.. WHO IS BEING HELD?.. UNKNOWN.. RUSSION GAS?.. UNKNOWN.. AND THE ISRAELI PALESTINIAN WAR STILL ALLOWED TO GO ON.. .. about oil concessions used to bribe the UN security council members to vote the US way on the Iraqi inspections resolution.. about the great black greasey liquid.. about Richard Perle's recent speech pledging, 'the government of new Iraq will reimburse the US for its liberation.. [and] the evolving democratic government [would support and give generous allowance to].. the heavy investment [that will be] made by US oil companies in developing [Iraq's fantastic latent oil wealth].'. Robert: we were told it was about 'weapons of mass destruction'.. about Tony Blair's 'dossier'.. when Saddam used gas on the Iranians, Reagan sent Donald Rumsfeld to shake his hand.. -56:30 End today's show. today's review by john lionheart.. [and thanks to adam and molly and greg and heather in creating a genial ambiance today]

The following inspirational piece by new paradigm author, Marianne Williamson, excerpted from her book, "A Return to Love" and quoted by Nelson Mandela in his 1994 inaugural address: Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light--not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves--who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous ? Actually, who are you--not to be ? You are a child of God. Your playing small-- doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking, so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. We are liberated from our own fear; our presence automatically liberates others.
"The attitude of great poets is to cheer up slaves and horrify despots" ...Walt Whitman
My heart rouses
thinking to bring you news
of something that concerns you
and concerns many men. Look at
what passes for the new.
You will not find it there
but in despised poems.
It is difficult
to get the news from poems
yet men die miserably every day
for lack of what is found there.
-- William Carlos Williams
'The theory of a free press is that truth will emerge from free discussion, not that it will be presented perfectly and instantly in any one account.' Walter Lippmann
