NEW: Uruguay Reveals US Plot For Coup In 72 Hours
Wednesday, Dec 11, 2002 - Start Audio
-00:00 Dennis Bernstein: introduction:
cross burning a protected activity?.. Narco News on Venezuelan general strike: 'revolt of the spoiled brats'.. Oil still spilling, killing.. Houston protests, memorial.
 VenezuelaNS IGNORE RICH MANS STRIKE
-00:55 Robert Knight and the Knight Report.. Robert: so-called *general srike* in Venezuela.. oil tanker joins strike.. sabatage.. CIA funded.. North Korean ship seized by US, released today.. missiles to Yemen.. in Djibuti.. Bush says he now has unstrained use of US nuclear weapons.. in Iraq, inspectors inspect.. how US got the uncut copy of the Iraq report.. US purloined the report.. Trent Lott backing off support for Thurmond's 1948 presidential run.
-05:37 Dennis: in November.. the oil tanker Prestige off the coast of Spain.. sunken, single hulled.. now w Nick Jenkins of the International Fund for Animal Welfare.. Nick: oil patches coming ashore all up and down the west coast.. 30,000 tons of dirty crude.. the worse kind of oil.. 15,000 birds wiped out.. a lot of grim news.. about IFAW's wildlife rescue operation.. one beautiful island totally engulfed by oil.. phenominal effort by volunteers.. hundreds of miles, some of it shear cliff.. winds blowing more oil to shore.. depressing to think just how long this will have an impact.. scientists predict shellfish may be obliterated.. in an area where shellfishing employs 13,000 people.. for maybe a decade.. about the birds affected.. of the 11 nesting pairs of shoewater (sp?) birds, 7 dead already.. 1 bird cleaned and to be released.. will ship 50 birds to Portugal.. Dennis: the Spanish government reporting the situation worse.. soldiers working on cleanup.. the ship still leaking though.. Nick: this is really bad.. and this spill not contained to a specific location.. spread over a tremendous area.. and more oil spilling everyday.. losing 180 tons of oil everyday.. that could go on for months.. up to a decade.. frightening that one single wreck could cause so much damage.. -16:30 music break
-17:44 Dennis: in Venezuela in recent days a growing resistance to the biased right wing media and the *general strike* (also see: Rich Mans Strike).. now w Al Giordano of Narco News.. in the past 36 hours momentum has turned against the coup plotters.. the people taking to the streets every night.. the problem is the oil oligarchy.. Venezuela the 5th largest oil producer in the world.. US's largest importer.. Hugo Chazez has led four straight election victories.. Venezuela has the healthiest democracy.. 4 TV chains, owned by the upper class.. Venezuela used to be a regualar *two party* system.. on Friday a man opened fire on anti-Chavez opponents.. like before the last military coup in April, snipers opened fire on a crowd killing 18.. president for a day Carmona released them.. the shooter said an opposition general was the one who hired him.. the crooked TV stations doctored a video.. the last straw for the Venezuelan people.. protesting outside the TV stations.. the media still putting out an atmosphere of intimidation.. the US media parroting these lies.. very clear to them that they are lying.. last night a pots and pans banging protest by pro-Chavez folk.. tonight too.. last night two bangers shot dead at close range.. where is that lying phoney journalist, Phil Gunson?.. the US Embassy down here will not talk to me.. because I am an independent journalist.. they will only talk to those reporters who lick their boots.. a clear tradeoff of access in exchange for lies.. about Reuters and other mass media.. you wonder how some of these people can sleep at night.. also class hatred by the rich against the poor.. that the poor would elect their own government, terrifies the rich.. Dennis: Otto Reich a roving ambassador.. Al: but now he's missing.. he messed up the April coup attempt.. he messed up the Colombia situation.. Brazil and Ecuador.. Lucio Gutierrez.. Lula (link2).. suddenly Simon Bolivar's dream of a united South America seems possible.. a lot of US money gone into the coup.. (link1) (link2).. and the complete distortion by the US State Department.. a travel advisory.. there is not a hatred of Americans in Venezuela.. Dennis: prognosis?.. Al: the goal may just be low intensity warfare.. keep Chavez so busy defending himself, that he can't make progress.. a big land reform law (Land Law) to take effect.. the owning class upset.. a Hydrocarbons Law, giving the people more of a share of the oil profits.. (OxfordEnergy.org) (industry site).. the April coup overturned.. an article on Narco News, showing how Venezuela's share of oil profits has gone from 80% in the 1970's to 15% now.. this is not a strike, it is a lockout by management.. the gangsters running the oil companies will be removed.. then the final battle, with the corporate controlled dishonest mass media itself. -35:56 music break -36:26 Dennis: is cross burning a form of free speech?.. or a illegal form of intimidation?.. now w King Califani (sp?) ex-director of the Virginia NAACP.. King: the Virginia court ruled that cross burning on someone else's yard was protected speech.. case on its way to the Supreme Court.. the family was tramautized.. they have moved away.. if you burn a cross on your property, that may be your right.. but if you come onto someone else's property, that's trespassing and a hate crime.. we've been bombarded with the so-called, The World Church of the Creator (about).. Virginia has a history, the first place where enslavement was codified.. cross burning sends a signal that blacks, jews, other minorities not wanted.. people of good will need to change these laws.. we have seen some progress here.. but some still fighting the civil war here.. a new government.. .. about Trent Lott's statement supporting Strom Thurmond's segregationist campaign for president.. about his non apology.. he's not fit to lead.. and if he stays, we'll know we have a klansman at the helm of the US Senate. -47:47 music break -48:14 Monica Lopez: United For Peace called on local groups yesterday to come out in celebration of International Human Rights Day.. in Houston, outside FAO Schwartz, protestors waved signs saying drop toys not bombs.. (audio from a comedy sketch of a US run in with Santa Claus over a no fly zone).. now w Dave Atwood, activist.. Dave: the toys US planning for Iraq.. bombs, cluster bombs, that's the present the US is planning to send the children of Iraq.. now w a Salvadoan refugee.. you can do and say whatever you want, until you experience what war is really like.. a Houston's Rofco (sp?) Chapel.. (audio of a memorial in memory of Philip Berrigan, for the millions of innocent citizens killed or disappeared in Colombia, Iraq, Rwanda, Indonesia and other places in the world, with the theme "NEVER AGAIN"..)

The following inspirational piece by new paradigm author, Marianne Williamson, excerpted from her book, "A Return to Love" and quoted by Nelson Mandela in his 1994 inaugural address: Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light--not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves--who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous ? Actually, who are you--not to be ? You are a child of God. Your playing small-- doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking, so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. We are liberated from our own fear; our presence automatically liberates others.
"The attitude of great poets is to cheer up slaves and horrify despots" ...Walt Whitman
My heart rouses
thinking to bring you news
of something that concerns you
and concerns many men. Look at
what passes for the new.
You will not find it there
but in despised poems.
It is difficult
to get the news from poems
yet men die miserably every day
for lack of what is found there.
-- William Carlos Williams
'The theory of a free press is that truth will emerge from free discussion, not that it will be presented perfectly and instantly in any one account.' Walter Lippmann
