-00:00 Leslie Kean: introduction: East Bay rep Barbara Lee says Trent Lott should step down.. a New York man just released after serving 17 years for a crime he didn't commit.. Marin County votes a moratorium on the death penaly..
-00:47 Robert Knight and the Knight Report.. Robert: *general strike* in Venezuela enters 12th day, Chavez fires shirking oil company executives.. Iraq wants talks with Kuwait.. alternative to invasion.. more French troops to Ivory Coast.. Palestinian snipers hit two Israeli soldiers, Israeli soldiers kill 7 Palestinians.. North Korea to restart nuclear program because of US provocations.. Trent Lott's latest comment just the tip of his racist iceberg.. -04:26 Leslie Kean: now w the East Bay's US House rep, Barbara Lee.. Barbara: on Trent Lott's repeated support for segregation.. Lott's repeated patterns (link2) (link3) of being on the wrong side of liberty and justice for all.. I'm totally disgusted.. the Republicans (and Democrats) in the Senate should ask him to step down.. Strom Thurmond's 1948 campaign stood foursquare for racial discrimination.. about the Black Caucus statement.. about Lott's 'apology'.. but this is not an isolated comment.. we have a whole history and pattern of behavior.. most people don't have an idea of the insidious nature of Jim Crow.. I vividly remember having to go to 'colored only' water fountains, and being with my father in his military uniform being turned away from restaurants, and being told, 'We don't serve n****rs'.. if Lott's past is ok, what will he do now?.. how will he organize the Senate to deal with continuing injustice?.. very important for people in California to step up to the plate.. email the president.. better yet, send faxes, letters.. flood the White House with communications.. we need to hold these people accountable.. I don't believe Lott can lead the Senate.. Leslie: Colin Powell and Condi Rice haven't responded to this?.. Barbara: they should both come out and ask him to resign.. with Nancy Polosi, we have a progressive infrastructure in Congress.. we need to register more people to vote.. we must take back the White House and Congress.. -16:54 Leslie: now with a recent commentary by Mumia Abu-Jamal.. Mumia: example of Louis 14th of Spain.. the divine right of kings.. now the divine right of capital.. states are but instruments of corporate lust for gain.. we're now facing a war for oil.. the divine right of cash.. would we be going to war if Iraq was oil-free?.. the brillance of Louis has been superseeded by the boring George Bush.. Iraq will become little more than a gasoline station with a flag.. Calvin Coolidge said the business of America is business.. he presided over the start of the crash of 1929.. -20:33 music break -21:45 Leslie: Angelo Martinez released from life in prison after 17 years.. another man confessed.. now from New York, Angelo and his attorney.. Angelo: about how I was convicted.. 1975.. only one guy said I did it, that was it.. no physical evidence.. about the violence in prison.. no one cares who you are.. Leslie: how did you keep your sanity?.. Angelo: I kept telling myself I was innocent and someday.. then I basically accepted that prison was going to be my life.. then a miracle.. Leslie: your original attorney disbarred?.. told that another man confessed to the crime, but didn't follow through.. Attorney: US attorney in a drug case, in 1979, made a mob hit man admit to 'all his crimes'.. one of those crimes was the murder of the person Angelo was convicted of.. the hit man gave the name and date, even said he knew that another man (ie Angelo) was in prison for that murder.. US attorney wrote the DA and the original attorney.. but the DA demanded a polygraph test.. the confessor *failed* the lie detector.. and nobody did anything else.. Angelo not even told about the hit man's confession until 2001.. then the DA had a guilt attack and the whole thing was checked out.. and it checked out.. in 1979 the attorney should have checked out the confession, the DA should have checked out the confession.. they have an obligation to insure no innocent person is convicted.. they didn't inform his appellate lawyer, only informed his limp trial lawyer.. the DA never gives any weight to a lie detector test.. Leslie: 13 years from the time the DA knew about the other confession, until Angelo's release.. Attorney: the Queen's DA.. suffers nothing.. no responsibility.. Leslie: Angelo, your reaction when you found out?.. Angelo: I was overwhelmed.. once I heard I has being exonerated I didn't believe it.. Leslie: what has the state, the DA done to help you recover?.. Angelo: they have have done nothing.. my attorneys are assisting me in finding employment.. the state took my life, I have nothing.. I have no money, no ID, no drivers license, no credit.. a 37 year old man.. starting over like a teenager.. I didn't get anything from the state.. if I get sick, I got no benefits.. nobody even bothered to call me from the state.. Attorney: to get anything, we have to bring a case to the NY Court.. to a judge appointed by the governor.. no jury trial.. Attorney: no money for lawyers for indigent persons.. in the last 18 months, a number of men released after serving 162 years in prison for crimes they didn't commit.. Leslie: what would you like to tell the governor?.. Angelo: we need competent attorneys to represent minorities, the poor.. and make the police conduct diligent investigations.. shouldn't be just one person can say you did it.. it's sad, they just lock you up on the word of one person.. they didn't bother to even question me.. I was arrested, put in a lineup.. falsely identified.. that was it.. they never even questioned me.. -42:13 music break Jack Johnson -43:00 Leslie: recently Marin County, California supervisors voted for a death penalty moratorium.. now w Sister Marian Irvine, a Dominican nun who works with the Marin County Death Penalty Moratorium.. Sister Marian: we got this Marin County moratorium going.. collecting signatures.. got 96,000 signatures.. held a forum here at the college.. got Greg Wilholt to speak.. talked to the supes.. and got a unanimous approval.. Marin County houses San Quentin, but the resolution will have no effect on executions there.. now w David Atwood of the Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty.... David: 33 executions in Texas this year so far.. but we had moratorium bills passed out of committee.. not passed though.. in El Paso, a moratorium resolution passed by county supes.. 289 total executed since death penalty restated.. Texans support the death penalty 70%.. but support for moratorium is 50%.. the problem is Texas is extremely conservative.. and education, the people don't know much about the flaws in the death penalty.. Sister Marian: about Sister Helen, author of Dead Man Walking.. about Murder Victims Families for Reconciliation.. many cities have passed moratorium resolutions.. -54:50 Mary Bishop: wrapup

The following inspirational piece by new paradigm author, Marianne Williamson, excerpted from her book, "A Return to Love" and quoted by Nelson Mandela in his 1994 inaugural address: Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light--not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves--who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous ? Actually, who are you--not to be ? You are a child of God. Your playing small-- doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking, so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. We are liberated from our own fear; our presence automatically liberates others.
"The attitude of great poets is to cheer up slaves and horrify despots" ...Walt Whitman
My heart rouses
thinking to bring you news
of something that concerns you
and concerns many men. Look at
what passes for the new.
You will not find it there
but in despised poems.
It is difficult
to get the news from poems
yet men die miserably every day
for lack of what is found there.
-- William Carlos Williams
'The theory of a free press is that truth will emerge from free discussion, not that it will be presented perfectly and instantly in any one account.' Walter Lippmann
