-00:55 Dennis: Pentagon preparing to use  anti-personnel landmines in Iraq.. reports that US stockpiling landmines on bases around Iraq.. now w Mark from Human Rights Watch.. Mark: they used 117,000 land mines in 1991 Gulf War in Iraq and Kuwait.. didn't kill one enemy soldier or stop one tank.. casualties though to our own troops and to civilians.. Bush administration has been *reviewing* land mine policy.. in secrecy, no public debate.. US has done some right things, stopping exports, providing money to clear old land mines.. President Clinton refused to sign the treaty banning landmines.. 15,000-20,000 people killed or maimed by landmines every year..  70% are civilians, 33% are children.. in areas where there is now peace.. not something Americans have to worry about walking to the 7-11.. Iraq is severely affected by land mines and unexploded ordinance throughout the country.. from the Gulf War, Iran-Iraq war, WWII.. especially in northern Iraq, Kurdistan.. US mines have been found in northern Iraq.. about 12 other countries made mines laid there too.. about anti-personnel mines, designed to kill or maim people.. scattered by aircraft.. at road junctions, where there is a good probability of killing civilians.. 81 US mine casualties in Desert Storm.. our 'allies', Britain, etc. have signed the land mine treaty, the US hasn't..

THE US IS THE ULTIMATE ROQUE STATE.. BLOWING OFF THE UNITED NATIONS CHARTER AND INTERNATIONAL LAW.. pre-emptive attacks not allowed.. US threatening to nuke Iraq if say Iraq should try to launch a missile at Israel.

US accusing Iraq of stockpiling weapons of mass destruction, refusing to honor international treaties, etc.. but who has the most weapons of mass destruction?.. the US.. -27:23 music break Leslie: Kathy Kelly's Baghdad Journal.. Sean Penn arrived in Iraq Friday accompanied by Norman Solomon.. now w Kathy Kelly of Voices in the Wilderness.. Kathy: we're pleased to have doubled our numbers (to about 30).. three doctors, and a lawyer.. about a girl who needs a heart operation.. we went to visit.. treated with great hospitality.. grim sight, the country one big mud puddle.. the surgury put off and put off by the parents, no money, a cold one room home, uncovered latrine, worries about a possible war.. Dr. Hilfinger.. the father has worked everyday of his life.. we also met.. has an effective NGO.. disaster preparedness very slim.. water is short, storage is weak.. health care centers don't even have water.. 40% of Iraqis sell part of their rations every month..  60% rely on food rations for all their food.. no cushion, if rations are interrupted, civilian consequences.. we're going to set up a tent and serve tea and cookies tomorrow.. at a water treatment plant.. Bush has set that he won't order attack on civilian infrastructure.. Dr John Evans, a seasoned TV man, will speak with university students.. another librarian.. it's been a busy time.. some of us went to a farm today.. now w Norman Solomon of the Institute for Public Accuracy on the phone.. Norm: we went to a children's hospital in Baghdad.. saw children suffering from cancer and leukemia..  from depleted uranium and treatment made almost impossible by economic sanctions.. about Sean Penn's being here.. his statement Friday.. Kathy: people are encouraged here when they hear Americans are organizing..
